The Programme:
African French Speaking Community Support (AFSCS) provides a friendly and welcoming weekly programme for older people aged 65 and over in Smethwick. The project is designed to help older residents stay socially connected, physically active and creatively engaged, while reducing loneliness and isolation.
Our sessions bring people from different backgrounds together in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment. Participants can meet new people, develop friendships and take part in enjoyable activities at their own pace.
What happens at the sessions?
Each Friday, participants can enjoy befriending and social activities, arts and crafts, and gentle exercise. Arts and crafts provide opportunities to learn new skills, express creativity and work alongside others, while our gentle exercise activities are adapted for older people and can include seated exercises, light movement, balance and coordination activities.
There is also plenty of time for conversation, refreshments and simply enjoying the company of others. No previous experience is required, and activities are designed to accommodate different abilities and levels of confidence.

Through the project, we aim to:

Improve physical and emotional wellbeing.

Encourage older people to remain active and independent.

Build friendships and stronger community connections.

Provide opportunities for creativity, learning and participation.

Create an inclusive space where older people from different cultural and social backgrounds feel welcome and valued.
