HELPING PEOPLE AND WELFARE SUPPORT

We provide One-to-One support with: Housing support, coaching for jobs, Advice, information, signposting and benefit checks and support. This activity targets families and older people who do struggle with English, can’t understand or speak in English. Our volunteers are working very hard to support older people to apply for some welfare benefits, such as: Child Benefit, Child Tax Credit, Housing Benefit & Council Tax Support, Attendance Allowance, PIP, Care’s Allowance, white goods, and furniture

Universal Credit and Debt management

Universal Credit (UC) is rolling over in Sandwell since November 2018. Due to language barrier experienced by disadvantaged families, especially those from non-English speaking countries and all the issues faced by people who are already part of this UC system, we are delivering this scheme in order to raise awareness about UC requirements and how to overcome issues around debts. The project trains disadvantaged adults by delivering 5 sessions for a group of at least 10 people. The sessions cover relevant information about UC, budgeting skills and debt management.

Promoting Sport Activities

September 13, 2019

Netball Sport for Girls

According to Women in Sport, 51% of the UK population is female, yet when it comes to sport and physical activity, 1.6 million more men are playing sport once per week than women. Gender stereotypes are one of the key barriers preventing more women and girls getting active. For example, only 43% of girls say they have the same choice as boys at school in sport and exercise; and among secondary school-age children, being sporty is still widely seen as a masculine trait

We are promoting sport and physical activities for women and encouraging more women to become active and lead healthy lifestyle. We are going to lunch project involving women in Football, Netball, Basketball, Gym and Zumba dance. We are also going to promote sport days in order to involve all members of the family to undertake one sport activity.

We also promote sport activities in the community involving: Children and young people, adult and older people. The following sport activities are in great demand within our community: Football, basketball, badmington, swimming, gym, table tennis, court tennis, judo, martial art and kick-boxing.

Befriending Services

In his seminal work, Weiss (1973) identified two types of loneliness: loneliness through social isolation and loneliness through emotional isolation. The former describes loneliness caused by a lack of social ties, social integration or sense of community, which might be experienced following relocation. The latter refers to an absence of a personal, intimate relationship or reliable “attachment figure”, such as a partner. While emotional isolation seems to be linked with emotional loneliness, social isolation has stronger associations with social loneliness.

According to our Needs Assessment, many people within our community are living in isolation and loneliness, facing barriers to interact with others. Most of Older people, Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Migrants from the French speaking community are cut off the rest of the society and live in the margin due to language and cultural barriers. The need consists of improving their social capital and social inclusion. Therefore, we do undertake home visit, one-to-one support and group activities, such as: Luncheon Club, Evening Befriending group, Concert and other gatherings. We are intending to run some projects in order to reduce their isolation and loneliness.
